Who are we?
DMD Therapeutic and Behavioural Consulting was founded in 2021 in response to a clear need: specialised, compassionate support for boys and families living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Following the closure of the Muscular Dystrophy Association in 2019, many families experienced a loss of community connection and practical guidance. DMD Consulting was created to help bridge that gap; to restore connection, provide informed support, and ensure families do not feel alone in navigating complex systems.
What began with a focus on boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy has grown alongside the community we serve. Today, we work with boys and girls with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), individuals with Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD), dystrophinopathies, and other neuromuscular conditions.
Over time, our work has grown as we learn, evolve and respond to the needs of the individuals and families we support. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model, we have shaped our approach around what our community has told us matters most.
We provide capacity-building support, therapeutic group opportunities, training, and behaviour support to individuals and families across Australia. We collaborate closely with families, schools, and broader support networks to ensure consistency and understanding across environments.
DMD Consulting primarily provide services through NDIS funding. We are currently an unregistered provider and are working toward registration.
As a not-for-profit organisation, we remain strongly committed to the broader neuromuscular community. We aim to offer guidance and support to newly diagnosed families and to those navigating life outside the NDIS wherever possible.
Our Focus
We focus on the social model of support, designed to empower individuals with DMD, BMD, MD and other dystrophinopathies. By supporting them find purpose, establish autonomy, and achieve success in their lives, our holistic approach significantly improves their quality of life, reduces behaviours of concern, and fosters stronger relationships.
Our Framework
Our framework centres on enhancing day-to-day living and creating inclusive communities. We provide opportunities for meaningful engagement for individuals with DMD and other dystrophinopathies, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose.
Our Team
DMD Consulting is a small team, working closely to provide cohesive and consistent services to all of our participants and their families. Our team consists of Behaviour Practitioners, Developmental Educators and Therapy Assistants who work closely with one another, and those we support to find purpose, develop autonomy, build meaningful relationships and experience success in a way that feels right.
What do we stand for?
At our core, we are a community-driven organisation.
Our practice is grounded in both lived experience and academic expertise in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and related neuromuscular conditions. Over the past 15 years, Director Michelle Pomeroy has worked closely with leading experts, presented within the field, and built strong networks across the neuromuscular community.
We understand that DMD is not simply a diagnosis. It affects identity, family systems, education, peer relationships, and long-term planning. This insight shapes how we approach our work every day. The knowledge we bring is specific to neuromuscular conditions and informed by years of community involvement. Guided by both qualitative insight and evidence-informed practice, we aim to provide support applicable across home, school, and community settings that goes far beyond surface-level information.
