Positive Behaviour Support

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based approach that focuses on improving quality of life while reducing behaviours of concern. Rather than using punishment or reactive strategies, PBS helps us understand why behaviours occur and works with the individual and their support network to build meaningful skills, improve communication, and meet their needs in a respectful, proactive way. It aims to reduce or eliminate the need for restrictive practices by making changes that support the individual’s wellbeing across all environments.

At DMD Therapeutic & Behavioural Consulting, PBS is provided by Michelle Pomeroy under Jon Martin Psychology & Consulting. Michelle is a qualified Behaviour Practitioner and Developmental Educator with over 18 years of lived and professional experience supporting those with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions. Her approach is compassionate, practical, and grounded in deep understanding of how neuromuscular conditions impact behaviour across the lifespan.

What Does This Include?

  • This support involves developing a behaviour support plan for the individual. The plan is based on understanding what’s happening and why, and includes positive strategies tailored to the person, their family, and support team. It focuses on reducing or eliminating behaviours of concern by building skills, improving communication, and making changes to better meet the person’s needs. The aim is to improve quality of life and provide clear, practical steps for everyone involved.

  • This includes training for families, support staff, and other stakeholders in behaviour strategies tailored to the person’s disability, helping everyone feel confident and consistent in how they provide support.
