Supporting the Individual

Specific and targeted 1:1 capacity building for individuals to develop their autonomy, independence, self-direction, and improve their overall quality of life. This can happen across environments and is targeted to the individual’s needs, enabling them to have choice and control.

  • Communication - building fluid, expressive, and social communication and building their autonomy to be heard.

  • Interoception - understanding their own body’s response to feelings and emotions and knowing how and when to act on these.

  • Self-direction - being able to identify their own needs, regulate their emotions, and make decisions to meet their needs without relying on maladaptive behaviour.

  • Social skills - developing their Theory of Mind and building capacity to identify meaningful interests, actively engaging in these, as well as initiating and maintaining friendships with others.

  • Self-care - developing independence in self-care where possible, and establishing autonomy in taking an active role when others need to help.

  • Understanding their disability - supporting the individual to understand their disability, how this impacts them, and for those with neuromuscular conditions, understanding fatigue, their body’s needs, and adjusting and coping with the progression of their disability, adapting to using new or changing equipment and how these help to gain independence, and accepting additional supports as they increase.

  • Other areas - targeted skill-building in other areas based on the individual’s need including work and job skills, transitioning from school to early adulthood, daily living skills at home and in the community and more.

All capacity building provided to the individual is informed by specific and evidence-based assessment data collected at the start of services provided. More information about our assessments can be found on this website.

CraftLab Therapeutic Group

The purpose of this group-based Developmental Education Therapy is to provide an opportunity for those with neuromuscular conditions to engage in social and self-direction skill-building in a supported environment, backed by capacity building strategies and input. This allows participants to form ongoing friendships and build their capacity in social skill areas through engaging in a craft project of their choosing alongside the other participants. This means that it does not feel like therapy; rather, it feels like a fun, interest-based hobby group!

Our CraftLab Therapeutic Group is run weekly Tuesdays 1:00-3:00pm ACST for a 10 week block.
