DMD Therapeutic & Behavioural Consulting eNewsletter - Vol. 2

October 2025 Edition.

Welcome to Volume 2 of our newsletter! We’re excited to bring you more stories, updates, and insights from our community.”

In this issue…

For this bi-monthly update we’re celebrating a brilliant achievement from one of our participants who created their very own recipe book. We’re also reflecting on the importance of creating a supportive environment for our placement students, and the value this brings to everyone involved. Lastly, we’re sharing a quick reminder about the Emergency Card, a simple but powerful tool we recommend all families have on hand.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT…

What a wonderful September it has been! Our annual World Duchenne Awareness Day (WDAD) gathering was such a joy to celebrate.

It was more than just a chance to raise awareness for Duchenne and Becker — it was an evet that brought together our wider neuromuscular community, a community we feel so grateful to be part of.

Even though we may not provide services to everyone who came along, please know how much we appreciated seeing each and every one of you there.

SUCCESS STORIES…

Charlie, a 17-year-old living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, created this book as part of his Year 12 Studies. With a deep appreciation for his family’s recipes and a passion for food, Charlie wanted to make sure these treasured meals were preserved, and, accessible to others living with DMD or similar challenges.

With support from DMD Consulting, Charlie thoughtfully included tips and tricks that reflect his lived experience - small but meaningful ideas that can help make cooking more manageable and enjoyable. From ways to conserve energy in the kitchen, to choosing tools that are easier to use, Charlie’s insights offer practical guidance for others who may be navigating fatigue, mobility limitations, or fine motor difficulties.

This recipe book is more than just a collection of family favourites. It is a celebration of creativity, perseverance, and the power of sharing what we love with others.

RESOURCE OF THE MONTH…

Emergency Care Card

In an emergency, having the right information on hand can make all the difference. We’ve developed a free Emergency Care Card for young people living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) to help families, schools, and support staff share important care information quickly and clearly.

The Emergency Care Card is available at no cost and can be ordered directly by contacting us. We encourage families to keep one close and to share copies with schools, caregivers, and other key people in their child’s support network.

THERAPEUTIC TIP OF THE MONTH…

Assessments

When we think of assessments, this is generally to inform the NDIS of our children's needs however they are important and used to evaluate their strengths, to assess levels of expectation, consider fatigue and physical ability and the effects of cognition, motivation and staying on task, in the home, at school and in the community. The number 1 behaviour that we see within the neuromuscular community is refusal, “no i don't want too”. Our focus for therapeutic tips will be strategies and understanding to best support participants within the neuromuscular community, but this cannot happen without assessments!
